Hirax – Dark Energy 3d Telescope

The Brief

We were excited to be part of this multi-million rand global radio astronomy project and worked in collaboration with Blue Bottle Productions to create visualisations to help describe this intricate project. We were responsible for the 3d renderings of the satellites, motion graphics and assisting with a range of other post-production. Not only that, but we were also proud to have the work shown on SABC Television News. We helped them visualise their idea using a combination of problem-solving and digital mediums. The video production was done by Blue Bottle Productions, where they used a mix of drone footage, green screening, sound design and multiple revisions.

The program is managed out of the UKZN (University of KwaZulu-Natal) and to be located in South Africa site in the Karoo, the HIRAX (Hydrogen Intensity and Real-Time Analysis eXperiment) telescope system will consist of 1024 6-meter dishes.

Challenges / Solutions
  • The HIRAX project, a large-scale radio astronomy initiative, needed a compelling way to visualize and explain their complex scientific concept mapping dark energy through radio telescopes.
  • The challenge was to turn intricate technical data into visuals that were both scientifically accurate and engaging for the public and stakeholders.
  • In collaboration with Blue Bottle Productions, we created accurate 3D simulations and motion graphics combined with live-action footage to clearly visualize the HIRAX telescope’s complex scientific concept.

Outcomes
  • HIRAX will be able to determine the characteristics of dark energy during a critical period in our universe, between 7 – 11 billion years ago when dark energy became the dominant component in the universe causing it to expand at an accelerated rate.

Our work went national - Sabc News

Our 3d visualisation of the satelites was broadcasted on national television on SABC News. We were honoured to be part of this project.
